The most powerful low budget headlamp, Sofirn HS20 2700 lumens

The Sofirn HS20 is a front torch with an angular design equipped with two different beams that allows you to cover all possible scenarios: in fact, it allows you to have a wide and diffused beam to illuminate in the immediate vicinity, and at the same time a spot beam that allows you to reach very far. It is also possible to combine the two beams together to have an optimal view of everything around us.

This torch is available for sale with only one body color or black but it is possible to equip it with two different types of LEDs: there is in fact the version composed of 1 CREE XHP50.2 LED (for the throw spot beam) and the Samsung LH351d (for flood beam) and then there is a version that offers the SFT40 instead of the XHP50.2.

One of the main features of this light is the price at which it is sold. At the moment it is about 40 dollars without a battery and a few dollars more if a cell is added.

The body and the materials

The Sofirn HS20 is a torch with an angular design that can be used both as a head torch and can be detached from the headband if necessary to be used as an EDC torch for all day-to-day chores. The two sides, i.e. the two tails are flat, so the torch can be placed on them and used in tailstanding on flat surfaces. The body is entirely made of aluminum alloy with the classic type III hard anodized finish which makes the product resistant to wear, scratches and bad weather. The lettering is well done and has no smudges and is perfectly centered.

On the two tails the torch has a knurling that improves the grip and guarantees an always perfect grip even when your hands are damp or wet.

Under and behind the head there are dissipation fins which, although not very deep, help in the dissipation of the heat produced by the powerful LEDs with which this torch is equipped when they are turned on at high levels. The heat produced when using the torch at Turbo will cause the temperature of the light body to rapidly increase: in this case the dissipation fins are not enough to disperse all the heat, therefore the overheating protection system intervenes to the rescue and automatically decreases the light output thus allowing the flashlight body to cool down. This system makes the torch even safer and prevents excessive heat from causing damage to the electronic components inside the LED and to the battery.

The fillets arrive well oiled and smooth flowing. They are anodized therefore it is possible to mechanically lock the torch by simply unscrewing the tail cap slightly. The latter function is indispensable when the flashlight is carried inside a backpack and there is the risk of accidental ignition.

The contacts are golden and we have a protruding button on the positive side while a thick spring on the negative side.

There are two tail caps on the flashlight: one allows you to access the battery compartment while the other allows you to view the hidden Type-c charging port. The tail cap dedicated to the Type-C port has the usb logo printed on it, in this way it is impossible to make a mistake and unscrew the wrong cap.

The dimensions of this light are 83.5mm x 48mm x 26mm while the weight is 79g excluding the battery.

The Sofirn SH20 is primarily a headlamp so in most cases it will be installed on a headband. Sofirn supplies a comfortable and well-made elastic headband. It is very elastic and soft and the silicone support is comfortable to use directly on the head but also on work helmets. The elastic band strap is adjustable both in height and width therefore it adapts perfectly to the size of any person's head. On the support of the silicone torch there are two large rings where the light will be inserted. Once installed, the flashlight remains well locked thanks to these two rings but it is also possible to rotate it up and down in order to direct the beam exactly where it is needed. Attaching and detaching the flashlight from the bow is very simple, it's done in an instant.

The Sofirn HS20 is powered by a single lithium-ion cell. If you choose the package including the cell, a 3000mAh 18650 cell branded Sofirn will arrive in the package. The charging of the cell is done directly with the type-C charging port hidden on one side of the flashlight under a tailcap. The package includes a USB-A to USB-C cable for charging operations. A full battery charge takes about 2.5 hours so it's a fairly quick charge.

Interface management is entrusted to two different switches placed above the head of the light. Both have a small colored status LED inside. These two switches are independent and manage separately the two different emitters with which this light is equipped. Therefore, with the right switch it is possible to turn on and modify the levels for the Flood light beam while with the left one only the Spot beam will be managed.

The interface is simple and intuitive and allows you to effectively manage all the available functions. The switches have the same action for the respective emitter, therefore it is like having two torches in one: when the light is off, a simple click will allow you to access the last level used (memory mode), when the torch is on, a simple click will turn off the light.

From any state, a double click will allow you to access the turbo. From turbo mode, a simple click allows you to return to the previously used mode, therefore if you have turned on the turbo with the torch off, the torch will turn off with a click, otherwise if you have turned on the turbo starting from any level, the torch will switch from turbo to previously used level.

From the torch on, keeping the switch pressed will switch to the different output levels, scrolling between the low, medium and high levels, starting from the cycle, the Eco and Turbo levels are excluded.

From the flashlight off, three clicks will lock the interface electronically, while three more clicks will unlock it.

With the torch off, however, a long press will allow you to directly access the Eco mode.

Conclusions

There are many positive aspects that make this light a best buy to own and I will list them below:

  • The cost is very low compared to the competition. It is around 40 dollars which is more than acceptable given the good quality of the product.
  • The materials are good, the thicknesses abundant, the torch conveys a good feeling of strength and solidity
  • There are two different emitters that can work separately or together and it is therefore like having two different torches on your head.
  • There is the Type-C fast charging well hidden and protected by a special tailcap
  • Combination of Neutral tint and Cold tint suitable for any scenario. The two tints can also be mixed when both emitters are on
  • Comfortable elastic band even if the light is used on the head for several consecutive hours
  • Possibility to easily detach the torch from the bow to use it in hand like a normal EDC.
